The untold story of the Vatican
Within the walls of the Vatican City lies a history that goes back 2000 years. Before becoming the world’s smallest state in 1929, the site was home to a pagan cemetery, the gardens of Agrippina the Elder, the Circus of Nero, St Peter’s tomb, the Basilica of Constantine and a papal palace. Set on the Vatican Hill, St Peter’s Basilica is an architectural jewel, with masterpieces by Michelangelo and Raphael.
